The BestVox LS3/5A is a small two-way monitor built to the BBC LS3/5A design (BBC R&D 1976/29). It has a sealed cabinet, a 110 mm woofer and a 19 mm dome tweeter. Choose 11 Ω or 15 Ω, in Rosewood or Black Ebony veneer. Price is for a pair of speakers.
What the LS3/5A was made for
The BBC designed the LS3/5A for places with very little room, such as mobile control rooms for television. It became a standard monitor in recording studios, especially for classical music, and soon found its way into homes.
The small cabinet suits small living rooms and studies. It works best when you sit about 2 to 4 metres away.
How it sounds
The cabinet is sealed, not ported, so the bass is quick and well controlled. It also goes lower than the size suggests: 70 Hz–20 kHz ±3 dB.
The midrange is detailed and natural. Voices and acoustic instruments are where the LS3/5A is at its best, with clear stereo imaging.

LS3/5A, LS5/9 or LS3/6?
BestVox builds all three of these BBC designs. The main differences:
- LS3/5A: two-way, sealed, 305 mm tall, 70 Hz–20 kHz. For small rooms and close listening.
- LS5/9: two-way, bass reflex, 210 mm woofer, 460 mm tall, 50 Hz–20 kHz. More bass, and it plays louder.
- LS3/6: three-way with a super tweeter, 630 mm tall, 42 Hz–20 kHz. The deepest bass of the three.
